Small Biz Matters – a half hour program each week where you can work

ON your business rather than IN it.

Small Business – How does it affect your family?

With VERY special Guests Olivia & Abigail Boyd

You know, when it comes to perspective, we’ve covered a lot of important topics on this show. We’ve looked at small business from the eyes of your outsourced consultants, from lawyers to accountants and everything in between. We’ve chatted about how owning a business can impact on your own time. We’ve talked about the employee perspective of your business and we’ve discussed how to discuss setting up a small business with your life partner …. We’ve even looked at setting up your business from an IT perspective. But we’ve never really discussed the MOST important perspective. That of your kids!

In celebration of the end of the holidays I thought it would be an interesting perspective to hear from those we actually work so hard for – and let’s be honest, those on whom our hard work has the greatest impact.

So without further ado I’d like to welcome my own kids – Olivia and Abigail. Girls, welcome to Small Biz Matters!

Now I’ve brought you on my show girls so my listeners can get an idea of what its like, as a kid, to live in a house where Mummy or Daddy.

Part 1 – Kids Q&A

  • Where do your Mummy & Daddy Work?
  • Tell me a little bit about your Mummy’s and Daddy’s business?
  • Why do you think its good to be your own boss?
  • What are the some of the frustrating things about your mummy and daddy having their own business?

Part 2 – Kids Q&A

  • How did you feel when Mummy told your she was going to have her own business?
  • Do you think ANYONE can have their own business? What do you need to be good at to have your own business?
  • When were you the proudest of Mummy or Daddy’s business?
  • Do you think your mummy and daddy are happy running their own businesses?

Part 3 – Wrap Up

So why did I bring the kids on the show today? What sort of madness overcame me to risk bringing my kids who are only 7 & 8 onto the show? Well it came about after a dinner table discussion where the girls themselves were chatting about what it was like to have TWO businesses in the family and I realised that there must be some impact to see first hand the trials and tribulations of running your own business on their little worlds.

So I thought after today’s show some one you might want to sit down and ask your kids these or similar questions. It REALLY is interesting to find out what their perspective is on your small business. Even more interesting is if they are actually your ideal client – are you even getting it right?

But most of all I think this sort of discussion with your kids is really heartening. I found out that my kids, although they don’t know the nitty gritty of what I do, they DO know how hard I work and when I’m having a good, bad or ugly day and it really is fascinating to find out how much they absorb.

Little sponges they are….
